Azrael is a character appearing in DC Comics, first appearing in Batman: Sword of Azrael #1 (October 1992).
There have been multiple characters to hold the title of Azrael. The most well-known is Jean-Paul Valley, a genetically engineered assassin for the Order of St. Dumas. He was raised believing he was destined to serve as Azrael and brainwashed to fulfill that purpose.
Valley initially served as an ally to Batman, even temporarily replacing him after Bane broke Batman's back. However, Valley became increasingly violent and unstable, ultimately forcing Batman to reclaim the mantle. Subsequent Azraels have included Michael Lane, another candidate in a program to create super soldiers for the Order.
Azrael typically possesses enhanced strength, speed, and agility. The character has been reinterpreted in various media, retaining the core concept of a religious warrior with a potentially dangerous connection to the Order of St. Dumas.
